Ancestral ties: the birthplace of Tucson / S-cuk Son
Indian Country Today

In April 2023, the Tucson City Council unanimously approved a proposal to return 10 acres of ancestral land adjacent to the Santa Cruz River back to the Tohono O’odham Nation. This particular piece of land sits at the base of Sentinel Peak, known as the “birthplace of Tucson” which has been home to the O’odham’s ancestors for thousands of years. According to Ned Norris Jr., the Nation’s chairman, there are significant archaeological and historical remnants of ancestors on that land.
